The goal of the ECODE project is to develop, implement, and validate experimentally a cognitive routing system that can meet the challenges experienced by the Internet in terms of manageability and security, availability and accountability, as well as routing system scalability and quality. By combining both networking and machine learning research fields, the resulting cognitive routing system fundamentally revisits the capabilities of the Internet networking layer so as to address these challenges altogether.

For this purpose, the project investigates and elaborates novel semi-supervised, on line, and distributed machine learning techniques kernel of the cognitive routing system. During the building phase, the cognitive routing system is both designed and prototyped. In the second phase, three sets of use cases are experimented to evaluate the benefits of the developed machine learning techniques. The experimentation and the validation of these techniques are carried out on physical (iLAB) and virtual (e.g., OneLab) experimental facilities.

• European Future Internet Portal: serves as the common space for European activities and discussions on the future of the Internet. This portal provides an overview on European research projects in the Future Internet area as well as regularly updated information on important events and other news.
• Future Internet Architecture (FIArch): the main objective of Future Internet Architecture (FIArch) group activity is to define a common set of architectural design principles and a reference architecture of the Future Internet that can guide and unify key technology developments in the future. The scope is a FI Reference Architecture developed in a holistic way by incorporating design principles and by integrating key viewpoints. It will focus on core functionality of a Future Internet, including protocols, interfaces, invariants, interoperability and generic enablers. The first outcome of the FIArch group covers the fundamental limitations of the current Internet and the main Design Objectives of the Future Internet. It focuses on a few key architectural issues and fundamental limitations, shared and agreed by a considerable representation and coverage of FI stakeholders, including FIA projects. The FIArch Fundamental Limitations white paper may be downloaded from the following link. The second outcome aims to describe the FI Design Principles. "Design principles" defines agreed structural & behavioural rules on how a designer/an architect can best structure the various architectural components and describe the fundamental and time invariant laws underlying the working of an engineered artifact.
• Global Environment for Network Innovation (GENI): an NSF-funded research facility designed to allow experiments on a wide variety of problems in communications, networking, distributed systems, cyber-security, and networked services and applications. GENI enables researchers to experiment radically new network designs and to build their own new versions of the "net" or to study the "net" in ways that are not possible today. GENI is not a replacement for the Internet (or any other communications technology). The purpose of GENI is to give researchers the opportunity to experiment at a large scale a wide range of research ideas in data communications and distributed systems with real user populations.

FIRE research workshop, a Future Internet Week event (May 16, 2011)

• The first FIRE research workshop will be a full day workshop with focus on the experimentally driven research dimension of FIRE and in particular, to improve the visibility and the involvement of the experimental-driven FIRE projects as well as increase researcher attendance and their active participation to FIRE events and workshops. This should lead to a scientific and technical discussion forum that will allow projects and researchers working on similar subjects to share and challenge their ideas and results with their peers. By offering this opportunity the workshop aims at increasing the incentives for researchers’ participation, without intending to replace or compete with established research conferences and workshops.
  
• For this purpose, a small scale forum will be implemented in the form of a workshop, which allows researchers to share and discuss their experimental research results and best practices by means of short, targeted and well scoped presentations. By structuring them by similar research topics or objectives (multi-media/content networking, wireless, self-adaptive/cognitive networks, routing system, etc.), researchers would be able to challenge, compare and contrast practices, methodologies, and in particular obtained results. Future Internet Assembly Aalborg, 10-11 May 2012, Aalborg, Denmark

The Future Internet Assembly (FIA) will be held on May 10-11, 2012 under the Presidency of Denmark in the EU Council. The theme for FIA-Aalborg will be "Smart Cities and “Internet of Things" and will bring together projects that have recognised the need to strengthen European activities on the Future Internet to maintain European competitiveness in the global marketplace. Currently FIA brings together research projects that are part of the ICT programme of FP7. All of these projects are advancing the state of the art in their respective areas and FIA enables open interactions and cross-fertilization across the technical domains, reaching out to talent in Europe's Future Internet research community.

FIA is THE place for fundamental discussions supported by working groups, such as the architecture of the Future Internet or a roadmap for research in Horizon 2020 (the new name for FP8). But there is also place for one-off discussions around recent trends that when properly understood by projects will make their results more competitive and more ready for commercial exploitation. Think for instance about HTML5 and mobile computing using tablets. Does your project already understand what these cool technologies can bring?

Year 2011

Future Internet Week: In connection with the Polish Presidency in the EU Council in the second half of 2011, the "Future Internet Week" Conference will be held in Poznan, Poland from October 24-28, 2011 in the Lecture - Conference Centre of Poznan University of Technology, http://www.fi-poznan.eu/. The Future Internet Week includes a large number of adjacent events, such as the Future Internet Assembly (FIA), the ServiceWave conference, the FIRE event, the Future Internet Forum, the Internet of Things conference and many more.

• Future Internet Assembly (FIA), part of the Future Internet Week, will be in Poznan at the Poznan International Fair Centre on October 24-26, 2011.
• FIRE Day event on October 27 (full-day) and October 28 (half-day, morning only) are foreseen.
  • FIRE project demonstrations in conjunction with the co-located ServiceWave 2011 conference: as in FIA Ghent, an exhibition space in FIA-Poznan for demonstrations will be offered.
    • Full demo application details can be found here. The deadline for submitting a demonstration proposal (2-page demo description) has been extended to June 13, 2011.
    • Note: if there are sufficient FIRE demos, the proposal is to group together in one area ("FIRE Village"). Therefore, in order to estimate the space required, please inform <mailto: contact@ict-fire.eu> if you submit a proposal.
  • FIRE Day Agenda: you are invited to help create the agenda for the FIRE Day, via the FIRE wiki page at: http://wiki.ict-fire.eu/index.php/FIRE_event_Poznan. The items below are currently provisionally included:

The FIRE Initiative is creating a multidisciplinary research environment for investigating and experimentally validating highly innovative and revolutionary ideas for new networking and service paradigms. FIRE is promoting the concept of experimentally-driven yet long-term research, joining the two ends of academy-driven visionary research and industry-driven testing and experimentation, in a truly multidisciplinary and innovative approach. To make this approach a reality, FIRE also aims at creating a large scale European Experimental Facility, built by gradually connecting and federating existing and new testbeds for emerging or future internet architectures, services and technologies.

FIREWorks Support Action

FIREworks is the Support Action (SA) funded from FP7 Call 2, Objective 1.6 "New paradigms and experimental facilities" that coordinates and supports interworking of testbed activities in Europe and their respective connections outside of Europe, mainly to North America and Far East.

FIREStation Support Action

FIREStation is the Support Action (SA) funded from FP7 Call 5, Objective 1.6 "New paradigms and experimental facilities" that provides the FIRE Initiative with an active hub that matches, guides and co-ordinates demand for - and offering of - experimentation facilities in the context of future networks and services. The heterogeneous and modular field of Future Internet Research and Experimentation (FIRE) with its national and international stakeholder groups requires information sharing, cohesion building, community building and a single point of contact to co-ordinate and promote the FIRE approach with respect to the following main requirements: 1) Facilities need synchronization, resource optimization, and common efforts in order to offer customers the best possible service and ensure their sustainability beyond project life times. 2) Researchers need correct and timely knowledge about the available resources, easy access, high usability and appropriate tools to run and monitor their experiments.

• PlanetLab

PlanetLab initiated by from the University of Princeton, is a software platform structured around Planetlab nodes that compose a large distributed research network. PlanetLab currently consists of 888 nodes at 461 sites spread over the Internet. PlanetLab allows users to reserve slices on nodes and run experiments on them.

Since the beginning of 2003, more than 1,000 researchers at top academic institutions and industrial research labs have used PlanetLab to develop new technologies for distributed storage, network mapping, peer-to-peer systems, distributed hash tables, and query processing.

• OneLab

The OneLab project, funded by the European Commission under the Framework Programme 6 (FP6), aims at providing an open networking laboratory for integrating, testing, validating and demonstrating new fixed and wireless networking technologies in real world settings and production environments. The OneLab experimental facility provides for a large scale, and open testbed with real-life conditions.

OneLab follows three main goals: extending PlanetLab into new environments (such as WiMAX, UMTS, etc.) beyond the traditional wired Internet, deepening of PlanetLab's monitoring capabilities (passive and topology monitoring), and providing a European administration for PlanetLab nodes in Europe.

The OneLab2 project, funded by the European Commission under the Framework Programme 7 (FP7) and the FIRE initiative, continues the OneLab activities.

• iLab-t

iLab.t provides lab infrastructure to evaluate technical feasibility, performance, and service quality of ICT innovations at the earliest possible stage. This experimental facility consists out of 100 servers connected through a non-blocking Ethernet switch. The 100 high-end servers composing the experimental facility cluster come each with dual CPU dual core 2.0GHz, 4GB RAM, 4 or 6 Ethernet network interface cards (Gbps) – PCI express, and 4x80GB disks – software RAID 0 configuration. The servers are interconnected by a Force10 E1200 non-blocking Ethernet switch (1.68 Tb/s – 1Billion pps) that scales up to 672 ports. Each server is connected with 4 or 6 gigabit Ethernet links to the switch.
