• PlanetLab

PlanetLab initiated by from the University of Princeton, is a software platform structured around Planetlab nodes that compose a large distributed research network. PlanetLab currently consists of 888 nodes at 461 sites spread over the Internet. PlanetLab allows users to reserve slices on nodes and run experiments on them.

Since the beginning of 2003, more than 1,000 researchers at top academic institutions and industrial research labs have used PlanetLab to develop new technologies for distributed storage, network mapping, peer-to-peer systems, distributed hash tables, and query processing.

• OneLab

The OneLab project, funded by the European Commission under the Framework Programme 6 (FP6), aims at providing an open networking laboratory for integrating, testing, validating and demonstrating new fixed and wireless networking technologies in real world settings and production environments. The OneLab experimental facility provides for a large scale, and open testbed with real-life conditions.

OneLab follows three main goals: extending PlanetLab into new environments (such as WiMAX, UMTS, etc.) beyond the traditional wired Internet, deepening of PlanetLab's monitoring capabilities (passive and topology monitoring), and providing a European administration for PlanetLab nodes in Europe.

The OneLab2 project, funded by the European Commission under the Framework Programme 7 (FP7) and the FIRE initiative, continues the OneLab activities.

• iLab-t

iLab.t provides lab infrastructure to evaluate technical feasibility, performance, and service quality of ICT innovations at the earliest possible stage. This experimental facility consists out of 100 servers connected through a non-blocking Ethernet switch. The 100 high-end servers composing the experimental facility cluster come each with dual CPU dual core 2.0GHz, 4GB RAM, 4 or 6 Ethernet network interface cards (Gbps) – PCI express, and 4x80GB disks – software RAID 0 configuration. The servers are interconnected by a Force10 E1200 non-blocking Ethernet switch (1.68 Tb/s – 1Billion pps) that scales up to 672 ports. Each server is connected with 4 or 6 gigabit Ethernet links to the switch.

• PanLab

The goal of the ECODE project is to develop, implement, and validate experimentally a cognitive routing system that can meet the challenges experienced by the Internet in terms of manageability and security, availability and accountability, as well as routing system scalability and quality. By combining both networking and machine learning research fields, the resulting cognitive routing system fundamentally revisits the capabilities of the Internet networking layer so as to address these challenges altogether.

For this purpose, the project investigates and elaborates novel semi-supervised, on line, and distributed machine learning techniques kernel of the cognitive routing system. During the building phase, the cognitive routing system is both designed and prototyped. In the second phase, three sets of use cases are experimented to evaluate the benefits of the developed machine learning techniques. The experimentation and the validation of these techniques are carried out on physical (iLAB) and virtual (e.g., OneLab) experimental facilities.

The FIRE Initiative is creating a multidisciplinary research environment for investigating and experimentally validating highly innovative and revolutionary ideas for new networking and service paradigms. FIRE is promoting the concept of experimentally-driven yet long-term research, joining the two ends of academy-driven visionary research and industry-driven testing and experimentation, in a truly multidisciplinary and innovative approach. To make this approach a reality, FIRE also aims at creating a large scale European Experimental Facility, built by gradually connecting and federating existing and new testbeds for emerging or future internet architectures, services and technologies.

FIREWorks Support Action

FIREworks is the Support Action (SA) funded from FP7 Call 2, Objective 1.6 "New paradigms and experimental facilities" that coordinates and supports interworking of testbed activities in Europe and their respective connections outside of Europe, mainly to North America and Far East.

FIREStation is the Support Action (SA) funded from FP7 Call 5, Objective 1.6 "New paradigms and experimental facilities" that provides the FIRE Initiative with an active hub that matches, guides and co-ordinates demand for - and offering of - experimentation facilities in the context of future networks and services. The heterogeneous and modular field of Future Internet Research and Experimentation (FIRE) with its national and international stakeholder groups requires information sharing, cohesion building, community building and a single point of contact to co-ordinate and promote the FIRE approach with respect to the following main requirements: 1) Facilities need synchronization, resource optimization, and common efforts in order to offer customers the best possible service and ensure their sustainability beyond project life times. 2) Researchers need correct and timely knowledge about the available resources, easy access, high usability and appropriate tools to run and monitor their experiments

The initiative has two related dimensions: Building a European Experimental Facility for Future Internet research, and supporting experimentally-driven advanced research, which defines the challenges for and takes advantage of the dynamically evolving facility.
